Penquis Child Development Receives a Grant from TJX CompaniesOctober 5, 2012
The TJX Foundation presented Penquis with a $5,000 check to support Penquis Child Development Centers throughout Penobscot County. Presentation of the check took place at the Penquis Child Development Center located in the Elsie C. Coffee Center on the Davis Rd. in Bangor. Penquis Child Development serves children 6 weeks to 5 years of age. Each classroom provides a nurturing environment with early learning opportunities, helping children to develop language, cognitive, physical and social/emotional skills while enabling parents to work, look for work, or attend school or training programs.
The TJX grant will allow the purchase of materials to support optimal development of children including materials that support early literacy, diversity, math and science, and materials that provide additional opportunities for sensory learning.
For the last three years, TJ Maxx sales associates have volunteered their time to read to children at Penquis Child Development Centers. "We are familiar with the quality of care and education these children receive and we are happy to be a part of providing funds that will enhance additional learning opportunities for the children," said Mitzi Rogers, Store Manager, TJ Maxx, Bangor.
The TJX Foundation has a primary mission of contributing to programs that help disadvantaged women, children and families. Penquis Child Development primarily serves children from low income families whose parents are working, looking for work, or attending school or training programs. Quality early childhood education helps parents go to work; prepares children to enter kindergarten.
In attendance was Mitzi Rogers, Store Manager of the TJ Maxx in Bangor, Mark Batson, Zea Joels, and Jeananne Proulx, TJ Maxx Sales Associates, Laurie Dunton, TJ Maxx Associate and Penquis, Jean Bridges, Director, Penquis Child Development, and Kara Hay, Penquis Child Development Operations Manager.
