Smart Starts for Students Starts in Greater Piscataquis County

Dover-Foxcroft, ME -Penquis’ Smart Starts for Students project is accepting registrations from parents and guardians who need back to school supplies for their children. Registrations will be accepted until July 31, 2012.  Individuals who live in the greater Piscataquis area and have school age children attending school in MSAD #4, #41, #46, #68 or Union #60 this Fall can register for assistance at www.penquis.org  by selecting the “Register Here-Back to School Supplies”, or calling 564-7116 or 1-800-215-4942 ext. 2440, or stopping by the Penquis office at 50 North Street, Dover-Foxcroft.

The need was high in the Piscataquis region last year and organizers anticipate that will not change. According to Sheree Brown, Project Coordinator, 373 students from the region registered for Smart Starts for Students in 2011. “It is our hope that each student registered will receive a basic pack of back to school supplies including binders, folders, notebooks, pens, pencils, erasers, crayons, markers, paper and, whenever possible, a backpack. These packs are valued at $15-$20 each, depending on the age group served,” said Brown. To help raise money for the project several fundraisers have been planned.

For the second year, there will be an Italian Dinner Buffet featuring authentic cuisine of pastas, pizza, soup, salad, desserts and beverages. This event is hosted by the Valley Grange at their hall located on the corner of the Guilford Center Road and Butter Street in Guilford and will held on Saturday, July 21 from 5-7 pm. The cost is $6 for adults/$3.00 for children/under 5 free. This event is supported by many area businesses, including Will’s Shop n Save, Shiretown Pizza, Spencer’s Bakery, Nor’easter Restaurant, The Maine Ingredient, Save-a-Lot and the Living Word Community Food Cupboard.

In addition, the Dover-Foxcroft Kiwanis is hosting a Hawaiian Dinner Buffet. This event will feature authentic cuisine of pork, chicken, or fish dishes with side salads, fruit, desserts and beverages. It will be held at the Piscataquis Valley Fairgrounds Dining Hall located at 77 Fairview Avenue in Dover-Foxcroft. The event will take place during the Dover-Foxcroft Kiwanis Benefit Auction, Saturday, July 28 from 4-7 pm. The cost for the meal is $8 for adults/$4.00 for children/under 5 free. This dinner is supported by Will’s Shop n Save, The Maine Ingredient, Penquis Rental, Living Word, Herring Brothers Meats, Community Food Cupboard and Save-a-Lot. “We hope many people from our community and beyond join us for either or both of these events for great food, great fun and to raise money for this great cause,” said Brown.

Organizers are asking businesses and community members to get involved. Anyone that would like to provide financial support to this project can visit the Save-a-Lot store in Dover-Foxcroft from July 16 - August 10 and purchase a “bus”.  Donated supplies may be dropped off at the drop boxes located at Camden National Bank branches in Dover-Foxcroft, Milo or Greenville or at Penquis in Dover-Foxcroft.
