Bangor, ME —Penquis announced today that it received $285,000 to advance its work in its service area from NeighborWorks America, a national nonprofit leader in housing and community development based in Washington, D.C. Penquis is one of 245 nonprofits across the United States that shared in approximately $60 million in NeighborWorks America grants.
“We want individuals and families in Maine to be safe, stable, connected and financially secure. This grant will support those goals by helping to provide more opportunities for safe and affordable housing, homeownership and home repair,” shared Kara Hay, Penquis CEO. “This grant will also fund opportunities for individuals to start new businesses and to support existing small businesses.”
In 2015, Penquis received nearly $350,000 in grants from NeighborWorks America. Those funds enabled Penquis to create opportunities for people to live in affordable homes and improve their lives. Hundreds of homes were weatherized; more than two hundred inefficient heating systems were repaired or replaced and close to two hundred homes received heat pump technology to increase energy efficiency. MaineStream Finance, a Penquis subsidiary, worked with almost 70 individuals to provide foreclosure intervention counseling and helped nearly 400 individuals to make sound home purchasing decisions.
