Ride to Wellness Gives Hope ...
At that time I was living in a big home that was very expensive to heat. I stopped by Penquis, the local Community Action Program located in Dover Foxcroft. I was going to see if I could get help with heating costs. While I was there I learned about one of their programs called Ride to Wellness. This program helps individuals with breast cancer by providing transportation assistance to medical treatments. I learned they had volunteer drivers that could take me to my treatments or I could get mileage reimbursement if I took myself.
I was in disbelief, actually shocked; what were the chances of my finding out about this program when I did? I didn’t know these types of programs were out there to help people; I have always worked and had insurance so I didn’t need the help. But I was at a time in my life when I did need the help and someone was there to help me.
It was at this time my faith kicked in and I felt like someone was looking out for me. My anger subsided and I pursued getting treatment. With the help of this program I did not have to worry about how I was going to pay for the gas. I do not know how I would have made it to all my radiation and chemo treatments without it. I now only have to go back every 3 months for a checkup. I want to say thank you for giving me hope and helping me to make this journey with cancer not so overwhelming.
