We hope this  program helps to ease some of the financial burden of getting your children back to school.  When money is tight, it can add a lot of stress to families and it is very expensive to get a children ready for school.  We hope this helps in some small way!  We focus on backpacks because it is one of most expensive items.  If we get donations of schools supplies we will distribute the basics as we get them.  Last year families said, “every little bit helps. so if any basic school supplies are donated, we will divide them up and distribute as well.  Last year we did get some pens, crayons pencils and notebooks but not much beyond that.

Here are a few tips and things to remember about the registering and picking up your backpack(s)
1.    The deadline to register is August 7th.  This is so we can have time to order enough backpacks, sort them and get them ready for distribution in all five of our locations. My best advice is…. If you are not sure if you are signed up is to call August 7th and double  check to see if you are on the list! This will avoid any disappointment or frustration on pick up day.

2.    When you register please specify which location you will be picking up your backpack(s) because that is where we be sending your backpack(s).  The five locations include: Bangor, Dover- Foxcroft, Rockland, Lincoln, and Millinocket.

3.    We plan to distribute backpacks to families beginning the week of Monday, August 23rd.

4.    If you are picking up in Bangor you will not be getting a phone call reminder.  We have over 800 people who pick up backpacks and we don’t have enough staff to make that many calls. Pick up times in Bangor are 9 am – 3 pm.  Please do not come early because we won’t be ready and  don’t have a comfortable place for people to wait.  In Bangor we will be distributing Mon. August 23 – Thursday, August, 26th   9 am – 3 pm.

5.    If you are picking up in Dover, Lincoln, Millinocket or Rockland you may get a phone call about a specific time during that week to pick up you backpack.  But you should plan on picking up on Monday – Wednesday between the hours of  9 – 3 pm that same week.

6.    You do not need ID to pick up your backpack.

7.    It is fine if a family member of friend picks up your backpack for you.  We just need to be able to find your name on our list.  So please REGISTER by August 7, by calling Penquis or doing so online at www.penquis.org. 

8.    If we can’t find your name on our list we will have to wait until everyone who has signed up has been served and then we will be happy to assist you.
