Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What areas of law do you cover?

Legal assistance is available in the following areas: divorce, determination of parental rights and responsibilities, protection from abuse, post judgment actions and other family law matters.

May I come in to see an attorney right now?

We ask that people call us so that we can do an intake over the telephone. We try to get back to the client within the week.

Can I do a divorce on my own? Can I get parental rights established on my own? The paperwork is so confusing, can you help me fill them out?

The answer to all three questions is yes. We offer one-time consultations to help individuals through the process on their own.

Am I eligible for services?

We serve people who cannot afford an attorney and who have experienced domestic violence, sexual assault or stalking. If you are unsure whether you qualify, please call.

Where does funding for the Law Project come from?

Funding for the Law Projects is provided in part by the US Department of Justice, Violence Against Women Office, the Maine Department of Health and Human Services, the United Way of Eastern Maine, and the Maine Civil Legal Services Fund.
