Job Overview

Join our Corporate Team! Penquis, a social services agency serving Penobscot, Piscataquis, and Knox counties for over 50 years, is currently seeking a detailed-oriented and motivated full-time Payroll Staff Accountant to join its Central Accounting team. As the Payroll Staff Accountant, you perform assigned fiscal accounting duties, including processing payroll, preparing payroll reports, reconciling withholding and benefit accounts, and assisting with audit preparation and related activities. You work closely with the Chief Financial Officer, Finance Director, and fiscal staff to support the efficient and effective operation of the fiscal office. This is a hybrid remote work position based out of the Bangor office, however, during the 6- month probationary period training will be required on-site daily.

Responsibilities

  • Assist other Payroll Team members with the internal processing of bi-weekly payroll for 500+ employees.
  • Create and verify electronic time entry.
  • Review payroll for accuracy and recommend any necessary adjustments within the Accounting and Financial Practices and Procedures Manual.
  • Maintain accurate payroll records and employees’ files, including the reconciliation of payroll accounts.
  • Work closely with Human Resources to ensure accurate benefit deductions and record keeping.
  • Processing payroll related accounts payables. Assist in various audits and other year-end processes, and other related activities.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree in accounting and 3-5 years’ related job experience.
  • Three years’ experience in a busy financial department.
  • Experience in computerized account software, including general ledger, accounts payable and accounts receivable.
  • Excellent computer skills, including experience in computer-based accounting applications, as well as spreadsheet and word processing programs.
  • Excellent communication skills for customer interaction and claim follow-up.
  • Ability to work independently and set priorities.
